へび道 Snake Road

へび道はその名の通りへびの様にクネクネと曲がっている道で、文京区千駄木と台東区谷中の境界にあります。
As its name says, the Snake Road is a curvy road like a snake. 
It forms the boundary of Sendagi (Bunkyo Ward) and Yanaka (Taito Ward).

もともとは藍染川という川で、藍染川は今もこの地下を通って上野の不忍池の方へ流れ続けています。
 It used to be a river called the Aizome River, and the river is still running underground towards the Shinobazu Pond in Ueno. 

藍染川は氾濫が多かったため,1921から暗渠（あんきょ）工事が開始され、道路になりました。
In 1921, the underdrain construction of Aizome River started because it overflowed too much.

“藍染”という名は、上流に藍染が職業の人が多かったという説や、水源が染井だからという説、そして二つの川が合流するので逢初川とする説などがあります。
It is said that it was named “Aizome” because there were many dyers in the upper reaches (Aizome means Indigo dye), because the river flows from a place called Somei, and also because two rivers first meet and it makes the Aizome river (Au= meet, zome=the first).

下町の情緒がたっぷりで、歩いていると人々の生活を身近に感じられます。
The Snake Road is located in the downtown, so you can feel people’s daily lives. 

また、道沿いには立ち寄りたくなるおしゃれなお店もあります。
Moreover, there are fancy shops that make you want to stop by.
